Land Acknowledgement Statement

Honouring the Land and Our Shared History

As we work together to build a stronger, more inclusive community in Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York, we must recognize and honour the deep history of the land on which we gather, live, and work.

We acknowledge that the land we are meeting on is the traditional  territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg (ah-nish-naw-bek), the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee (hoodt-en-oh-show-nee), and the Wendat peoples. Today, this land is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (may-tee) peoples.

We also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Why This Matters

A  land acknowledgement is a small but vital step in the process of Truth  and Reconciliation. For time immemorial, Indigenous peoples have acknowledged the land at the start of gatherings. By continuing this  practice, we participate in an act of reconciliation that honours an Indigenous presence dating back over 10,000 years.

In  Ward 10—home to the heritage grounds of Old Fort York and our vibrant  waterfront—we are constantly reminded of our history. This  acknowledgement is an invitation to reflect on the past and consider the meaningful actions we can take moving forward. It serves as a daily  reminder that we are all accountable to these relationships and to the  enduring resilience of Indigenous peoples in our city.

We  thank our Indigenous friends for founding and creating this land, and  we owe them a debt of gratitude in perpetuity. We have much to do to  repair relations with them, and I am committed to doing so, and  to continue to learn from them.
